Twice vs Telegram: Which Messaging App Works Better in the UAE?

Telegram works well for text messaging in the UAE, but its voice and video calls are generally restricted on local networks. Twice Messenger offers an alternative with voice and video calls that work without a VPN, plus intelligent contact management and real-time people discovery features that Telegram does not provide.

Do Telegram calls work in the UAE without a VPN?

Telegram voice and video calls are generally restricted on UAE networks. The TDRA regulates telecommunications in the UAE, and VoIP services that bypass licensed carriers typically face limitations. While Telegram's text messaging, channels, and file sharing work normally, users often find that call features do not connect reliably without additional tools.

This creates a challenge for residents and visitors who rely on Telegram for communication. You can send messages and media freely, but calling family or colleagues requires workarounds. Twice Messenger takes a different approach, with voice and video calls designed to work on UAE networks without requiring a VPN. How do Twice and Telegram compare for contact management?

Telegram stores contacts in a standard list format, searchable only by name or username. Twice offers an intelligent phonebook that lets you search contacts by where you met them, when you connected, their industry, or their company. This solves a common problem: remembering everyone you meet without relying on memory alone.

Consider meeting someone at a conference. With Telegram, you save their number and hope you remember who they are months later. With Twice, the app automatically records context: the date, location, and any profile details they share. Six months later, you can search "Dubai conference" or "marketing" and find them instantly. This intelligent approach to contact management sets Twice apart from traditional messengers like WhatsApp and Telegram.

Can you discover people nearby with Telegram or Twice?

Telegram has a "People Nearby" feature that shows users who have enabled location sharing. However, it displays minimal information and has been associated with spam accounts. Twice takes nearby discovery further with detailed profiles, social links, and professional context for people who choose to be visible.

At a cafe, coworking space, or networking event, Twice shows you who is around with their digital business card. You see their industry, company, and social media profiles before deciding to connect. Unlike dating apps such as Tinder, Twice serves both professional and personal networking. And unlike LinkedIn, discovery happens in real time based on physical proximity. Explore the features to see how nearby discovery works.

Which app offers better privacy and spam protection?

Telegram offers end-to-end encryption only in "Secret Chats," while regular conversations use server-side encryption. Twice provides end-to-end encryption by default for all communications. Both apps let you control who contacts you, but they take different approaches.

Telegram uses usernames and phone numbers for discovery, which can lead to unsolicited messages from strangers. Twice gives you granular control over visibility and contact permissions. You decide who can see your profile, message you, or view your location. This zero-spam philosophy means you receive only communications you have approved. The UAE government portal provides guidance on telecommunications privacy for residents concerned about data protection.

• Twice: end-to-end encryption on all chats by default
• Telegram: end-to-end encryption only in Secret Chats
• Twice: permission-based contact system prevents cold outreach
• Telegram: anyone with your number or username can message you
